What is the ruling on hunting implements that kill by blunt force or impact rather than penetration?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Hunting and Slaughter
Primary text
The ruling on all hunting instruments is the same as that of the *mi'radh* (blunt weapon). If the implement kills by hitting something sideways (bluntly) without causing a penetrating wound, the game killed is unlawful (not permissible to eat). This applies if a spear, lance, sword, or arrow strikes a bird sideways and kills it, or if it strikes with its edge without penetrating and kills by its weight. This is based on the statement of the Prophet (peace be upon him): "That which pierces, eat it." If the implement does not cause a penetration wound, it kills by its weight, resembling the killing by a blunt impact, and thus the game is unlawful. The value of the animal, if it was wounded (fixed in possession), is due from the one who killed it in its wounded state.
Supporting text
If the implement strikes with its edge but does not penetrate, killing the animal only by its weight, the slain animal is unlawful, similar to when it is struck sideways.
