Primary text

If a limb is severed and the animal retains stable life, the severed part is forbidden (*haram*) in all circumstances. This remains true whether the animal dies naturally, is ritually slaughtered (*dhabh*) afterward, or is killed by a second shot. However, if the remaining animal is ritually slaughtered while it still has stable life, the remaining part becomes lawful, but the severed part remains forbidden.

Supporting text

If the animal is struck in an area other than the designated slaughter site (*madhbah*) and dies, the ruling depends on whether the initial strike secured the death. If it did not secure the death, what remains is lawful, excluding the severed part. If the initial strike did secure the death, nothing is lawful, as the prescribed method for a capable animal requires slaughter in the throat and the *labba* (upper throat/jugular area).
