What is the ruling regarding an animal killed by a *Mi'rad* (a sharpened stick or projectile)?

Primary text
The ruling depends on the manner of impact. If the *Mi'rad* pierces the animal and kills it with its sharp point, it is permissible. If it kills by striking with its blunt side (its width or weight), it is considered *Mawqudh* (struck to death) and is forbidden. This view is held by Ahmad, Ali, Uthman, Ammar, Ibn Abbas, Al-Nakh'i, Al-Hakam, Malik, Al-Thawri, Al-Shafi'i, Abu Hanifa, Ishaq, and Abu Thawr. The evidence for the distinction is the hadith narrated by 'Uday ibn Hatim where the Prophet (PBUH) stated: 'That which pierces (the animal) eat, and that which kills by its blunt side is *Waqidh*, so do not eat it.' This is considered explicit textual evidence.

Al-Awza'i and the scholars of Sham permitted whatever the *Mi'rad* kills, whether by its point or its blunt side. Ibn Umar and Al-Hasan considered anything killed by a projectile such as a *Jalahiq* (a type of stone/projectile) or a *Mi'rad* to be among the *Mawqudhah* (animals struck to death by blunt force).
