What is the ruling regarding gathering fruit by throwing stones or striking palm trees?

Imam Ahmad stated that one should not strike with a stone or throw in a way that causes damage to the fruit. This is supported by the narration where the Prophet, peace be upon him, instructed Rafi' ibn 'Amr, who was throwing at Ansar's palm trees due to hunger, saying: 'Do not throw, but eat what falls; may Allah satisfy your hunger and quench your thirst.' Al-Tirmidhi ruled this hadith as Hasan Sahih (good and authentic).
