What is the ruling on severing a part of an animal while it is still alive?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Hunting and Slaughter
Primary text
If a part is severed from a living animal while it still possesses stable life, that severed part is considered carrion (maitah). This is based on the Prophet's saying: 'Whatever is severed from a beast while it is alive is carrion,' narrated by Abu Dawud. Furthermore, permissibility is established only through proper slaughter, and this act is not slaughter.
