Must the trained animal wound the game to make it lawful?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Hunting and Slaughter
Primary text
The sixth condition requires that the predatory animal must wound the game. If it kills the game by strangulation or by colliding with it, the catch is not permissible. This is the position of the majority, supported by the Hadith stating, "Whatever causes the blood to flow and the name of Allah is mentioned, eat from it," indicating that piercing the flesh is necessary. Killing by blunt force is analogous to killing with a stone or projectile, which is generally impermissible.

Al-Shafi'i holds one view that it is permissible based on the general implication of the Quranic verse and Hadith.
