What is the distribution involving a mother, a full sister, a brother by father only, a sister by father only, and a grandfather?
Chapter on Inheritance of the Grandfather
Al-Mughni
Book of Inheritance Shares (Farā'id)
Primary text
The mother receives one-sixth, and the grandfather receives one-third of the remainder, resolving the problem into eighteen parts: three for the mother, five for the grandfather, and nine (the half) for the full sister. This leaves one share divided among three, fixing the distribution from fifty-four parts. This specific resolution is called the 'Mukhtasara Zayd' (Zayd's Abbreviated method). If partition were applied to the grandfather initially, the distribution would resolve to thirty-six, leaving two shares divided by three, fixing the distribution at one hundred and eight, which is then reduced back to fifty-four, hence the name.
