Primary text
If the deceased leaves children of daughters or sisters, the estate is divided among their respective mothers according to their number. The share allocated to each mother is then divided equally among her children (by those who favor equality). By contrast, those who favor preference (tafdhil) divide the mother's share according to their prescribed inheritance shares.

The companions of Abu Hanifa differed: Abu Yusuf favored dividing the estate equally among the descendants based on their count, without regard for their mothers, applying the rule of 'to the male the share of two females' (like the children of sons) if they connect through sons or daughters. Muhammad ibn al-Hasan treated those connected through a son as sons, and those connected through a daughter as daughters, distributing shares based on the number of connections, then applying the male/female ratio within those resulting shares.
