Primary text

The paternal grandfather inherits one-sixth (al-suds) of the estate. This is established by the narration from Imran ibn al-Husayn where the Prophet (peace be upon him) initially granted the grandfather one-sixth, then another sixth, and finally stated the last sixth was a bestowal (ta'mah). Qatadah stated that the minimum share the grandfather inherited was one-sixth. Furthermore, the consensus of the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) affirms that the grandfather (father's father) is not veiled from inheritance except by the father, and they placed the grandfather in the position of the father concerning veiling and inheritance in all matters, except in three specific scenarios.

Hasan narrated that 'Umar asked about the ruling on the grandfather's inheritance, and Ma'qal ibn Yasar stated the Prophet assigned him one-sixth, though 'Umar questioned the source, indicating some uncertainty in the record regarding the precise extent of the ruling or its source.
