Primary text
The mother of the father inherits only by virtue of being a mother; thus, she inherits even if her son (the deceased's father) is alive. If her inheritance were solely through her paternal line, she would not inherit when her son is present. The consensus is that grandmothers share one-sixth, no matter their number, based on the narration where Umar shared the sixth between two grandmothers. Abu Bakr also reportedly shared the inheritance between the mother of the mother and the mother of the father, giving the latter only the fixed sixth due to the former inheriting as a mother. Since grandmothers are numerous heirs who are not represented by a male counterpart (like sons), their quantity does not affect the fixed share, just as with wives. The statement that their fixed share does not exceed one-sixth is meant to exclude any additional share they might receive through the return (*radd*), as they are eligible for surplus distribution.
