What is the ruling concerning the inheritance of granddaughters (daughters' daughters) when daughters (daughters of the deceased) inherit two-thirds?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Inheritance Shares (Farā'id)
Primary text
When the daughters of the deceased (daughters of the loins) fully claim their fixed share of two-thirds, the granddaughters are excluded, unless there is a male descendant at their level or lower (like a son of theirs or a nephew) who acts as a residuary (Asaba) to strengthen their claim by applying the rule of 'to the male the share of two females.' This is the position of the majority of scholars, including Ali, Zayd, Aisha, Malik, Shafi'i, and the people of opinion.

Ibn Mas'ud and those who followed him disagreed with the majority on six matters of Fara'id, including this one. They stipulated that the remaining portion should only go to the male residuary, thus excluding the granddaughters from the remainder, arguing that female descendants cannot inherit more than two-thirds overall.
