Primary text

Imam Ahmad, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated in the narration of Abu Dawud that he must be left sustenance (*qut*) by which he can subsist. If he has dependents, he must be left what suffices for their maintenance (*qiwam*). In another narration by Al-Maymuni, he stated that what is sufficient for his livelihood (*ma'ash*) should be left, and the remainder must be sold. This ruling applies to the elderly man and those of status who cannot exert themselves physically.
