What actions related to hygiene and appearance are permissible during I'tikaf (seclusion in the mosque)?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of I'tikaf
Primary text
It is permissible to engage in all forms of cleanliness during I'tikaf. The Prophet, peace be upon him, combed his hair while observing I'tikaf. Furthermore, one is permitted to apply perfume and wear fine clothing during I'tikaf. This practice, however, is not considered a Sunnah (recommended act).
Supporting text
Imam Ahmad disliked the application of perfume during I'tikaf, reasoning that since I'tikaf is an act of worship specific to a location, abstaining from perfume is legislated, analogous to the rulings concerning Hajj. However, wearing fine clothes and applying perfume are not prohibited because they do not invalidate marriage or other similar prohibitions, making the situation similar to fasting.
