Primary text

Permissible exits during obligatory I'tikaf are divided into four categories. First, what necessitates neither makeup nor expiation: exiting for necessary human needs and similar unavoidable matters. Second, what necessitates makeup but no expiation: exiting due to menstruation. Third, what necessitates both makeup and expiation: exiting due to sedition or similar self-necessitated reasons. Fourth, what necessitates makeup, with a difference of opinion regarding expiation: exiting for an obligation, such as departure for military service (Nafir) or observing Iddah.

Al-Qadi holds that for the fourth category, no expiation is due because it is an obligation for the sake of Allah, similar to exiting for menses. However, the apparent view of Al-Kharqi suggests expiation is due because it is an unusual exit, similar to exiting for sedition.
