Primary text

It is recommended for a woman observing i'tikaf to screen herself with something. This is based on the fact that when the Prophet's (PBUH) wives intended i'tikaf, they were ordered to set up their structures in the mosque. Furthermore, since men attend the mosque, it is better for both men and women that they do not see each other or are not seen by them. She should place her structure where men do not pray to avoid obstructing their rows.

Supporting text

It is also permissible for a man to screen himself, as the Prophet (PBUH) ordered his structure to be erected, which serves as better concealment and privacy for his deed.
