Primary text

I'tikaf is established as Sunnah (recommended practice) among scholars unanimously. Evidence for its Sunnah status includes the consistent practice of the Prophet, peace be upon him, seeking nearness to God and His reward through it, as well as the performance of I'tikaf by his wives both during his life and after him. Furthermore, the companions did not perform it unless they intended to, and the Prophet, peace be upon him, only commanded it to those who intended it, stating: "Whoever intends to observe I'tikaf, let him observe the last ten nights." If it were obligatory, it would not be conditioned upon intention.

Supporting text

The text mentions a weak hadith transmitted by Ibn Majah, via Ibn Abbas, stating that the one observing I'tikaf purges sins and records the rewards of all good deeds, but Imam Ahmad stated he knew nothing strong regarding the virtues of I'tikaf except weak narrations.
