Primary text

If the physical intimacy is done without lust, such as washing the head or passing an object, it is permissible. This is evidenced by the Prophet's (PBUH) wife 'Aishah combing his hair while he was in i'tikaf. If the intimacy is done with lust, it is prohibited based on Quran 2:187 and the narration from 'Aishah that the Sunnah is not to touch a woman. If ejaculation occurs due to lustful touching, the i'tikaf is invalidated.

Supporting text

In the second opinion of Al-Shafi'i and the view of Malik, it is invalidated in both cases (with or without ejaculation) because it is prohibited intimacy. However, the primary view distinguishes based on whether the act itself invalidates the fast; since intimacy short of intercourse that does not lead to ejaculation does not invalidate the fast, it should not invalidate the i'tikaf.
