What is the ruling on sexual intercourse during i'tikaf?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of I'tikaf
Primary text
Sexual intercourse during i'tikaf is forbidden by consensus, based on Quran 2:187. If it occurs intentionally, it invalidates the i'tikaf by unanimous agreement of scholars. If done forgetfully, the ruling is the same according to our Imam (Ahmad) and Abu Hanifah and Malik.

Al-Shafi'i holds that if done forgetfully, it does not invalidate the i'tikaf, arguing that since foreplay not leading to ejaculation does not invalidate the fast, neither should this minor intimacy invalidate the i'tikaf. There is no expiation (kaffarah) for intercourse in the apparent position of the Madhhab, as i'tikaf is not an obligatory act originating solely from the Law (Shari'ah).
