Primary text

The Imam must inspect horses before entering hostile territory, ensuring they are strong, not broken, weak, emaciated, or lame. If a warrior witnesses battle mounted on such an unfit horse, he receives no share for the horse. This view is held by Malik.

Supporting text

Al-Shafi'i holds that the owner receives the horse's share, similar to a sick person. The argument against granting the share is that the horse provides no benefit, akin to a disheartening supporter, and it is an animal whose presence is forbidden in battle.
