When Abu Qatadah recounted killing a polytheist during the Battle of Hunayn, the Prophet, peace be upon him, declared that whoever kills a slain man must have evidence proving it to claim his spoils. Upon Abu Qatadah relating the event, a man stated the spoils were with him. Abu Bakr opposed granting the spoils to the second man, citing that Abu Qatadah was fighting for Allah and His Messenger. The Prophet, peace be upon him, confirmed Abu Bakr's statement and awarded the spoils to Abu Qatadah.
