Distribution ratio for a cavalryman and his horse from the spoils?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Jihad
Primary text
The majority of scholars rule that a cavalryman is allocated three shares from the spoils: one share for himself and two shares for his horse. This is the established position of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, Al-Hasan, Ibn Sirin, Husayn ibn Thabit, and the general body of early and later scholars, including Malik, Al-Thawri, Al-Layth ibn Sa'd, Al-Shafi'i, Ahmad, Ishaq, Abu Thawr, Abu Yusuf, and Muhammad.
Supporting text
Abu Hanifa states that the horse receives only one share. The evidence supporting the three-share distribution is the narration from Ibn Umar that the Prophet (peace be upon him) allocated three shares to the cavalryman at Khaybar, two for the horse and one for the owner, which is supported by narrations from Abu Ruhm and his brother, and Ibn Abbas.
