It is permissible to accept wealth offered by the inhabitants for a truce, whether given in a lump sum or as continuous land revenue (*kharaj*). If they are people from whom *jizya* (poll tax) is accepted, the Imam must accept the *jizya* and refrain from fighting, based on the verse: "Until they give the *jizya* willingly while feeling themselves subdued" (Quran 9:29). If they offer wealth other than *jizya*, the Imam accepts it only if he sees public interest (*maslaha*) in doing so; acceptance is not obligatory if he does not see such interest.
