Primary text

It is permissible for the Imam to allocate *Nafal* to a soldier for bravery, prowess, or enduring hardship beyond what the rest of the army endures, even without prior stipulation. Ahmad affirmed this practice, citing the Prophet, peace be upon him, giving Salamah ibn al-Akwa' both the share of a horseman and a foot soldier, and the Prophet accepting a woman captured by Abu Bakr's contingent as a gift. This is done because it serves as an incentive for fighting and benefits the Muslims, similar to the established right to spoils and the extra share for a horseman.

The opinion that this is permissible only if stipulated beforehand is countered by the fact that if giving nothing is permissible, giving a specific amount is also permissible. Furthermore, the precedent set by the Prophet, peace be upon him, is considered established for subsequent leaders unless there is proof restricting it solely to him.
