Primary text

It is permissible for the Imam or his deputy to offer a reward (ja'l) to someone who guides them to a matter of benefit for the Muslims, such as an easy path, water in a desert, a fortress to be conquered, property to be seized, an enemy to raid, or a breach to enter through. There is no known disagreement on this matter because it is a reward offered for a public benefit, making it permissible, analogous to the wages paid to a guide. The Prophet, peace be upon him, and Abu Bakr hired a guide during the Hijra.
