Primary text
The taking of the spoils (salb) of the slain is permissible. This is the position held by Al-Awza'i. The evidence is the command of the Prophet, peace be upon him, regarding the slain man from Salamah ibn al-Akwa': "He has all of his spoils entirely," and his statement, "Whoever kills a combatant, he has his spoils." This encompasses everything belonging to the slain.

Al-Thawri and Ibn al-Mundhir disliked this practice because it involves uncovering the private parts of the dead.
