Primary text

Renouncing a treaty with a group is permissible if there is a fear of them breaking their covenant. This is based upon the decree of Allah the Almighty: "And if you fear betrayal from a people, then renounce the treaty to them on equal terms" (Quran 8:58). This means one must inform them of the abrogation of the covenant so that both parties are equal in knowledge concerning this fact. The fear of betrayal is not satisfied merely by suspicion; rather, there must be clear indication supporting the feared betrayal.
