Is naval warfare superior to land warfare?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Jihad
Primary text
Naval warfare is legislated and carries great virtue. The Prophet peace be upon him laughed upon waking and related seeing a group from his nation performing Jihad at sea, riding upon the sea's waves like kings upon couches (Agreed upon with Anas ibn Malik). The one who dies at sea due to sickness or drowning receives greater reward than a martyr on land; the one afflicted by seasickness vomiting receives the reward of one martyr, and drowning yields the reward of two martyrs (Hadith narrated via Umm Haram, reported by Abu Dawud). Furthermore, the drowning person's sins and debts are forgiven, unlike the land martyr whose debts remain, because the sea entails greater danger and hardship, encompassing both the enemy and the peril of drowning, and escape is dependent upon companions.

Umm Haram bint Milhan was stated to be the Prophet's foster aunt. The narrator speculates that the Prophet's observation about the naval fighters occurred before the verse of Hijab was revealed, possibly because he slept in her house and observed her hair.
