What are the prerequisites for the obligation of Jihad?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Jihad
Primary text
The obligation of Jihad requires seven conditions: Islam, maturity (Bulugh), sanity (Aql), freedom (Hurriyyah), being male (Dhukooriyyah), freedom from incapacitating harm, and the possession of sufficient sustenance (Nafaqah). Islam, maturity, and sanity are preconditions for all religious obligations because the unbeliever is untrustworthy in combat, the insane cannot perform Jihad, and the child is physically weak. It is established that Ibn Umar was presented to the Prophet (peace be upon him) at Uhud at the age of fourteen and was not permitted to participate in fighting, as affirmed by consensus (Muttafaq Alayh).
