Primary text
It is plausible that steadfastness is obligatory if victory is expected, due to the advantage it presents. God Almighty states, "How many a small company has overcome a large one by the permission of Allah. And Allah is with the patient" (Quran 2:249). This is exemplified by 'Asim and his companions, who fought until God honored them with martyrdom.
Supporting text
If the Muslims anticipate destruction if they remain, but safety if they withdraw, it is preferable for them to withdraw. Remaining firm is still permissible because they have the intention (gharad) for martyrdom, and victory is still possible even if they remain.
