Primary text

A man departing [for Jihad] should be seen off (*yushī’*) without the people meeting him at his location of departure. Ali, upon the Prophet's departure for the Battle of Tabuk, was not met [in this manner]. Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, may God be pleased with him, saw off Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan when sending him to the Levant. When Yazid, who was riding, suggested that Abu Bakr either ride or he dismount to walk alongside, Abu Bakr refused, stating he sought reward from God for every step he took on foot in God's path. Abu Abdullah also saw off Abu al-Harith al-Sayigh while the latter carried his sandals, intending for his feet to become dusty in the path of God, based on the hadith: 'Whoever's feet become dusty in the path of God, God forbids the Fire from touching him.'
