How is the burden of hospitality divided among the people of Dhimma?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Jizya
Primary text
The hospitality obligation is divided among the people of Dhimma proportionate to the amount of Jizya they pay. It is permissible to make hospitality substitute for the Jizya if its value equals or exceeds the minimum required Jizya. This is based on the account where 'Umar gave a monk the option between paying Kharaj (land tax) or hosting Muslims, and the monk chose hospitality, provided the stipulated hospitality equaled the least amount of Jizya due.

It is mentioned that stipulating their hospitality as a full replacement for their Jizya is an invalid stipulation because God commanded fighting them until they pay the Jizya. However, if the condition is for a wealth amount equivalent to the Jizya, it is valid, similar to stipulating garments equal to the value of the Jizya.
