Must the conditions of the covenant, specifically the obligation to pay Jizyah, be actively upheld by the People of the Book and Magians?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Jizya
Primary text
The *Jizyah* is only accepted from the People of the Book and the Magians if they remain established upon what they covenanted, which involves the obligation to pay the *Jizyah* and adhere to the rulings of their religious status (*Millah*). This is because Allah commanded fighting them until they give the *Jizyah*, meaning they commit to paying it. If this commitment is not present, the permissibility of shedding their blood and taking their property remains.

Regarding lineage, the apparent view is that there is no distinction regarding whether a person converted to their religion before or after their Book was altered, or whether they are the son of two People of the Book, one People of the Book and one idolater, or two idolaters. However, there is a view that if a person joined their religion after their Book was altered, the *Jizyah* is not accepted from them.
