Primary text
Entry into mosques built by Muslims by non-Muslims is prohibited without the permission of the Muslims. This is established by the action of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, who saw a Magian on the pulpit of the mosque, descended, struck him, and expelled him through the doors of Kinda.

Permission for entry is valid according to the soundest opinion within the school of thought. This is evidenced by the Prophet, peace be upon him, hosting the delegation of Ta'if in the mosque before their conversion, and the report that Abu Sufyan used to enter the mosque of Medina while still upon his polytheism. Furthermore, Umayr ibn Wahb entered the mosque while the Prophet, peace be upon him, was inside, intending harm, and Allah granted him Islam therein.
