Is the Jizyah applicable to Arabs?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Jizya
Primary text
The *Jizyah* is applicable to Arabs. The general scope of the Quranic verse regarding the People of the Book implies no distinction based on ethnicity. Furthermore, the Prophet sent Khalid ibn al-Walid to Dawmat al-Jandal, where he took *Jizyah* from Akidar Dawmah, who was an Arab. He also commanded Mu'adh to take one Dinar from every able-bodied man among the People of the Book in Yemen, who were largely Arabs. The consensus is established because Umar ibn Al-Khattab sought to take *Jizyah* from the Banu Taghlib tribe, Arabs, even though they eventually agreed to pay an equivalent substitute after joining the Romans, and no one disputed the obligation of taking a levy from them.

Abu Yusuf argued that the *Jizyah* should not be taken from the Arabs because they were honored by being from the Prophet's own lineage. This view is refuted by the explicit evidence cited, which shows *Jizyah* being taken from Arab groups like the people of Dawmat al-Jandal and the Christians of Najran.
