A non-Muslim trader is generally not permitted to stay for more than three days, according to the narration attributed to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), after which departure is required. This duration is established by the precedent set by Umar.

It is held by Al-Qadi that the permissible stay is four days, corresponding to the limit of shortening prayers for a traveler.
