Primary text

A levy of one-tenth (*'ashr*) is taken from a Christian from the Banu Taghlib tribe, which is double the amount taken from People of the Book who are considered Dhimmis. This is established by the tradition where Umar commissioned someone to take one-tenth from the Christians of Banu Taghlib and half of one-tenth from the Christians among the People of the Book. Furthermore, the ruling is supported by the principle that the required levy on them should be double what is taken from Muslims. Muslims pay one-quarter of one-tenth (one dirham for every forty dirhams), and the required levy for these Christians is double that rate, aligning with the practice stated by the report regarding the levy of one dirham for every twenty dirhams.

Some jurists argue that the proper comparison is to double the amount taken from Muslims, not double the amount taken from Dhimmis, as this is more logical since the due amount on them generally should be double what is taken from Muslims.
