What restrictions apply to the modes of transportation used by Dhimmis?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Jizya
Primary text
Dhimmis are prohibited from riding horses, as riding them signifies honor. They may ride all other forms of transport, but they must not use saddles and must ride sideways (ʿaradan), with both legs positioned to one side. This is supported by the narration where 'Umar commanded that the forelocks of Dhimmis be cut, that they wear girdles, and ride with their feet sideways.
Supporting text
They are forbidden from carrying swords, bearing weapons, or keeping them in their possession.
