What is the ruling on yielding space to People of the Book in gatherings or on the road?
General Chapter
Al-Mughni
Book of Jizya
Primary text
It is impermissible to give them precedence in gatherings or to initiate seating for them. When encountered on the road, they must be constrained to the narrowest part of the path. This ruling is based on the tradition from Abu Hurairah where the Prophet commanded, "If you meet one of them on the road, then constrain them to the narrowest part of it." The standard practice is not to make way for them.

A report concerning Ibn Umar states that he greeted a man who turned out to be an unbeliever. Ibn Umar commanded the man to return the greeting, and when he did, Ibn Umar responded by saying, "May your wealth and offspring increase," then turned to his companions and said, "May it increase so that he pays more in Jizyah (poll tax)."
