Primary text
It is permissible for a judge to admonish witnesses. Shurayh narrated that he would say to the witnesses upon their arrival, warning them of accountability before God, stating that he relies upon them in judging that day and will be held accountable with them on the Day of Judgment. This is supported by the tradition that a false witness will not have his feet move from the spot until his seat in the Fire is determined, which was recounted by Muharib ibn Dithar after a defendant accused the witnesses of lying.
