The compensation (thousand dirhams) is distributed proportionally based on the respective dowry (mahr) of each wife, which is the sound opinion in this matter, held by Ibn Hamid and the school of Ahl al-Ra'y, and is one opinion attributed to Al-Shafi'i.

An alternative opinion holds that each wife becomes liable for the *mahr al-mithl* (fair market value dowry) for herself. Another view among the Hanbalis suggests the liability is split equally between them.
