Primary text

It is stipulated that the performer of acts such as leading prayer (Imamate), giving the call to prayer (Adhan), performing Hajj, and teaching the Qur'an must be a Muslim. This opinion is held by Ahmad, 'Ata', Al-Dahhak ibn Qays, Abu Hanifa, and Al-Zuhri. Regarding the compensation for teaching the Qur'an, a secondary view exists suggesting it is disliked (Makruh).

Supporting text

Al-Zuhri and Ishaq disliked accepting wages for teaching the Qur'an. 'Abdullah ibn Shaqiq considered the money teachers receive as illicit earnings (Suhut). Al-Hasan, Ibn Sirin, Tawus, Al-Sha'bi, and Al-Nakha'i also disliked payment for teaching.
