Custody involves raising the child, protecting him, placing him in his crib, tying him, applying collyrium and oil, cleaning him, washing his clothes, and similar actions. The term is derived from 'hadn,' which refers to the area under the armpit and adjacent to it. The application of the term to child-rearing is metaphorical, derived from the protective manner in which a bird shelters its eggs and young beneath its wings.
