Is it permissible to hire someone for construction work?

Hiring for construction (*al-Istiajar lil-Binaa'*) is permissible. The contract may be stipulated based on a period of time or based on the specific work to be performed. If the hiring is based on the work performed, the location of the work must be specified because variations exist based on proximity to water and the ease of the soil. Furthermore, the dimensions of the structure—its length, width, and thickness—must be specified, along with the building materials, such as brick and mud, stone and mud, lime mortar (*shid*) and fired brick (*ajr*), or other similar materials.
