Is it permissible to rent a dog or a pig?

Renting a dog or a pig is impermissible under all circumstances. However, an alternative legal opinion permits renting a dog that is lawful to possess because it offers a permissible benefit, allowing lending, thus permitting renting like other permissible items. Two views similar to this are attributed to the companions of Al-Shafi'i.
