It is disliked (*yukrahu*) for a man to rent himself out for sweeping cesspits (*kasḥ al-kunuf*). Furthermore, it is disliked for him to consume the wages earned from this activity. This ruling is established based on the prophetic statement: "The earnings of the cupper (*ḥajjām*) are foul/unlawful (*khabīth*)." Since the free man is forbidden from consuming such earnings, service involving cesspit sweeping is deemed more deserving of prohibition. An account involving Ibn Abbas is related where he strongly condemned a man whose livelihood involved sweeping excrement, equating his earnings, pilgrimage (*Ḥajj*), and marriage contract to being foul (*khabīth*). This prohibition is due to the inherent baseness (*danā'ah*) associated with the act, drawing a parallel to cupping.
