Is it permissible to rent out a house for the sale of alcohol or gambling?

It is impermissible to rent a house for the purpose of selling alcohol or engaging in gambling. This is the position held by the majority of scholars. The prohibition stems from the fact that renting the property for these activities involves participation in a prohibited action, analogous to renting a slave for acts of immorality.

The companions of Abu Hanifa held differing views regarding the interpretation of his concession concerning rural areas. However, the primary view holds that facilitating such forbidden activities through rental is unlawful, regardless of location.
