What is the limit of a rental period specified as 'for a night' (laylatan)?

If the rental period is for a night, it extends until the first appearance of dawn (Fajr), according to the consensus of scholars. Evidence for this is found in the Quranic verses regarding Laylat al-Qadr, {Peace it is until the emergence of dawn} (Quran 97:5), and the verses pertaining to fasting which state: {and eat and drink, until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread. Then complete the fast until the night} (Quran 2:187).
