What is the ruling on a teacher striking pupils for discipline?
General Chapter

Book of Leasing
Primary text
A teacher is permitted to strike pupils for the purpose of discipline. Imam Ahmad stated, when questioned, that striking should be proportionate to the offense. He emphasized exerting effort to avoid striking, and absolutely forbids striking a very young child who lacks comprehension. Those who strike within these permissible limits are not liable for resulting damage. Al-Shafi'i holds that a teacher is liable if striking, arguing that discipline can be achieved without physical force.
Supporting text
Al-Shafi'i views that discipline can be achieved without striking. However, the established view refutes this, stating that custom dictates otherwise, and if instruction without striking were possible, striking would be disallowed due to being an unnecessary harm and infliction of pain.
