Primary text
Puberty is established in a female upon the appearance of menstruation (hayd) and the possibility of pregnancy (haml). The commencement of menstruation is an established sign of maturity, for which there is no known dispute. Evidence is found in the Hadith stating that Allah does not accept the prayer of a menstruating woman without a head covering. Pregnancy is also a sign of maturity because it is established in custom that offspring are created from the semen of the man and the fluid of the woman, as indicated in the Quran (Quran 86:5-7). If a female becomes pregnant, she is deemed mature at the time of conception.
