Primary text

The lending of every tangible item that yields a permissible benefit while remaining intact is valid. This includes dwellings, real estate, slaves (male and female), beasts of burden, garments, jewelry for wearing, a stud animal for breeding, and a dog for hunting, among others. The basis for this ruling is the precedent set by the Prophet, peace be upon him, who borrowed armor (adiru'), and references were made to the lending of a bucket (dalw) and a stud animal. Ibn Mas'ud mentioned the lending of a measure (qistah) and a balance (mizan), establishing the ruling for such items. Other similar items are judged by analogy (qiyas). Furthermore, any benefit the owner is entitled to extract is permissible for him to allow others to use, provided no prohibition exists, similar to garments.
